A panel usually rack mounted with jacks on the front to allow a patch cable to connect any of the two jacks to each other. The jacks immediately above and below each other may be normalled. In a typical configuration, the microphone jacks located anywhere in a building are wired to the top row of the patch panel; each platform jack to one panel jack. The bottom row is then wired to the inputs on a mixing console. Then a patch cable is placed between the top row jack that a microphone is plugged into, and the bottom jack corresponding to the channel on the mixer that is to control the microphone.
