Peak limiter

A device which allows the operator to specify a certain maximum output level, regardless of the input level. A peak limiter keeps signal spikes and extreme peaks in an audio system from destroying key components (speakers, etc.). Keeps loud pops from being so loud they damage or destroy the speaker system.
