- Acoustics: A signal processing technique used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio in recording. Generally, by emphasizing (amplifying) lower level frequencies (usually during recording) and then de-emphasizing them later (usually during playback). Typically reported as the time constant of the resistance-capacitance network used to pre-emphasize and de-emphasize the signal. Source: Church Audio & Acoustics Glossary
- Electronics: The gradual increase in amplitude of higher-frequency signals in frequency modulation practices for increasing signal-to-noise ratios. (See De-emphasis Circuit.)
