A diode characterized by having a breakdown region at a specific reverse-bias potential. This characteristic permits high current flow without diode damage. The breakdown region is known at the zener region and, despite the current increase, the voltage drop across the diode remains virtually the same as before the zener region is reached. Thus, the zener diode is useful in voltage-regulation applications.
