- The amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one gram of water from 14.5°C to 15.5°C. 1 calorie = 4.184 joules.
- a unit of heat measurement, usually the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 gram (ml) of water 1° C. A kilocalorie is the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1° C.
